Lichen Planus

Lichen planus is a chronic inflammatory condition that affects the skin, mucous membranes, hair, and nails. It typically presents as itchy, flat-topped, purple or reddish bumps that may be shiny or scaly. Here's an overview of lichen planus, including its symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment:

Symptoms:

  • Skin Lesions: The primary symptom of lichen planus is the development of small, flat-topped, polygonal bumps or papules. These lesions may appear shiny, reddish-purple, or brownish in color and can be itchy or painful.

  • Mucous Membrane Involvement: Lichen planus can also affect mucous membranes, such as the inside of the mouth (oral lichen planus), genitals (vulvar lichen planus), or esophagus. Oral lichen planus may present as white, lacy patches or painful sores inside the mouth.

  • Nail and Hair Changes: In some cases, lichen planus may cause changes to the nails, such as ridges, grooves, or thinning. It can also lead to hair loss or scarring on the scalp.

Diagnosis:

  • Diagnosis of lichen planus is typically based on clinical examination and medical history. Skin biopsy may be performed to confirm the diagnosis, especially if there is uncertainty or if other conditions need to be ruled out.

  • Oral lichen planus may require a biopsy if lesions are present in the mouth.

Acupuncture Treatment:

  • Symptom Relief: Acupuncture helps alleviate symptoms such as itching, pain, and inflammation associated with lichen planus. By stimulating specific acupuncture points, acupuncture can trigger the release of endorphins and other neurotransmitters, which helps reduce discomfort and promote relaxation.

  • Stress Reduction: Lichen planus outbreaks can be triggered or exacerbated by stress. Acupuncture's calming and stress-reducing effects may help individuals with lichen planus manage stress and anxiety, potentially reducing the frequency and severity of outbreaks.

  • Immune Modulation: Acupuncture has immune-modulating effects, which may help enhance the body's natural defenses and regulate immune system function. Strengthening the immune system may support the body's ability to manage lichen planus and promote healing.

  • Overall Well-being: Acupuncture promotes overall well-being and balance in the body. By addressing underlying imbalances and promoting relaxation, acupuncture helps individuals with lichen planus feel more comfortable and improve their quality of life.

Conventional Treatment:

  • Treatment of lichen planus aims to relieve symptoms and prevent complications. The choice of treatment depends on the severity and location of the lesions.

  • Topical Corticosteroids: Corticosteroid creams or ointments are commonly used to reduce inflammation and itching associated with lichen planus.

  • Oral Medications: In severe cases or when topical treatments are ineffective, oral medications such as corticosteroids, retinoids, or immunosuppressants may be prescribed.

  • Phototherapy: Light therapy (phototherapy) may be beneficial for some individuals with lichen planus, particularly if lesions are widespread or involve the mucous membranes.

  • Symptom Management: Over-the-counter or prescription-strength antihistamines may help alleviate itching associated with lichen planus. Oral rinses or gels containing corticosteroids may be used to relieve pain and inflammation in oral lichen planus.

  • Lifestyle Modifications: Avoiding triggers such as stress, certain medications, or oral hygiene products that may exacerbate symptoms can help manage lichen planus.
